Rumours swirl Stefanos Tsitispas and Maria Sakkari are a couple

Are Greece's tennis champs seeing each other?

Newsroom July 1 04:57

Romance rumours are swirling that Greece’s hot young tennis stars Stefanos Tstisipas and Maria Sakkari are secretly dating.

Rumours flared up even more when a tall figure appeared somewhere in the background of Sakkari’s training session at Eastbourne before the start of Wimbledon’s start.

In a photo posted on social media, the male figure with black glasses and a hood can be seen in the background discreetly watching Sakkari.

Stefanos and Maria have become loved by Greeks and non-Greeks worldwide as the athletes are going from strength to strength, placing Greece on the world tennis map.

Ranked No 6 in the world and seeded No 7 for Wimbledon, Stefanos Tsitsipas, 20, is arguably the best young player in the men’s game.

Tsitsipas has been seen getting cosy with fellow tennis pro Maria Sakkari in recent months, sparking rumours the pair were an item.

So what do we know about the Greek stars and are they in a relationship?

As young Greek tennis stars, Tsitsipas and Sakkari had plenty in common even before they both made it to the quarter-finals in Rome.

The 23-year-old has known Tsitsipas since childhood.

She explained: “My mum and his mother were tennis players. Our mums knew each other before they even got married, since they were 15 years old. So that’s a long time ago.

“I have known Stefanos since he was a kid but we played in a different category.
