The Evros River is the natural border between Greece and Turkey and is named after Evros, the son of Kassandros, king of Thrace. The river runs for 530 km of which 204 km are in Greek territory. Virgil says that this is where the Bacchae threw Orpheus’ head after tearing him to death. The habitat is one of the most productive in the region with renewable resources. The delta provides water for both drinking and irrigation and offers ideal conditions for livestock farming and fish breeding.
