Deaths in Greece up by 13.55% in the first four months of 2022

According to ELSTAT, an increase of 8,261 deaths (18.9%) occurred compared to the average of the first 17 weeks of the years 2016-2021

The number of deaths in Greece rose by 13.55% or (6,199 more deaths), including those due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in the first 17 weeks of this year (3/1 / 2022- 1/5/2022) and amounted to 51,960 (26,147 men and 25,813 women), while the corresponding period of 2021 (4/1 / 2021- 2/5/2021) there were  45,761 deaths (23,503 men and 22,258 women).

According to ELSTAT, an increase of 8,261 deaths (18.9%) occurred compared to the average of the first 17 weeks of the years 2016-2021 (43,699 deaths). The corresponding percentages, per year, for the period 2016-2021 amount to 2.93% in 2021 compared to 2020 (44,460 deaths), to 0.07% in 2020 compared to 2019 (44,427 deaths), to 7,21% in 2019 compared to 2018 (41,439 deaths), to -9.75% in 2018 compared to 2017 (45,918 deaths) and to 14.25% in 2017 compared to 2016 (40,191 deaths).

During the period of the first 17 weeks of 2022 compared to the corresponding period of 2021, the highest percentage increases were recorded in the 5th week (31/01 / 2022- 6/2/2022), the 4th (24/01 / 2022-30 / 1/2022), and the 2nd week (10/01 / 2022- 16/1/2022) with growth rates of 42.6%, 40.3%, and 35.1% respectively. While the most significant reductions were recorded in the 17th and 15th weeks with percentages of 6% and 5.7%.

By age group, it is observed that the deaths were more, in absolute terms, mainly in the age groups over 90 (2,545 deaths), 85 to 89 years (1,798), 75 to 79 years (769), and 80 to 84 years (635). While fewer deaths were recorded mainly in the age groups 30 to 34 years (16 deaths) and 0 to 4 years (42 deaths).

According to the region of permanent residence of the deceased, it is observed that the deaths show an increase in all 13 regions of the country. The largest increase, in absolute terms, is in the regions of Attica, Central Macedonia, and Western Greece with 1,277, 1,040, and 793 deaths respectively.
