Accommodation survey shows rise in overnight stays last year in Greece

The reference period of the survey is from January-December 2013

According to the recently published results of a survey conducted by ELSTAT, the Greek statistics office, on arrivals and nights spent in hotels and other types of accommodation in 2013 compared with 2012, an increase of 10.4% is recorded in arrivals and another one of 11.0% is recorded in overnight stays.

The breakdown of data by region shows that the regions accounting for the most significant share of arrivals and overnight stays are: Crete (18.8% of arrivals and 28.2% of overnight stays), Attica (18.7% of arrivals and 9.1% of overnight stays), South Aegean (17.1% of arrivals and 24.4% of overnight stays), Central Macedonia (13.1% of arrivals and 11.2% of overnight stays) and Ionian Islands (7.1% of arrivals and 10.9% of overnight stays).

More specifically, in 2013 compared with 2012, an increase of 13.5% and 13.0% is observed in arrivals and overnight stays by non-residents respectively and a similar trend is recorded for arrivals and overnight stays by residents, which increased by 5.2% and 7.9% respectively.

According to the monthly data, 72.6% of the arrivals and 83.0% of the overnight stays, in hotels, similar establishments and tourist campsites, are recorded during the period from May to September.

The breakdown of data by country of residence of the customers (guests) in hotels, similar establishments and tourist campsites shows that the largest share of arrivals comes from the European Union (63.6% of arrivals and 69.0% of overnight stays) and mainly from the United Kingdom (12.1% of arrivals and 14.5% of overnight stays), Germany (11.2% of arrivals and 15.0% of overnight stays), France (7.6% of arrivals and 6.4% of overnight stays) and Italy (5.6% of arrivals and 4.5% of overnight stays).

Moreover, as regards the other European countries, the largest share of arrivals comes from Russia (10.7% of arrivals and 14.1% of overnight stays)
