Ebola-infected T. Romero’s brother defends his sister

The Ebola-infected nurse Teresa Romero is reportedly doing better, but there has been public criticism of the Spanish government's handling of the outbreak

Newsroom October 12 09:55

There was an improvement noted in the health of 44-year-old Teresa Romero, the Spanish nurse who became the first person to be infected by the Ebola virus outside of West Africa. Her condition “improved” said a hospital source. Her brother, Jose Ramon Romero, confirmed that she no longer has a fever and is in a serious but stable condition.

EBOLANURSE

Her brother spoke to the press to defend his sister following recriminations made by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy when he spoke to the press following his visit to the Carlos III hospital. Mr. Rajoy had suggested that a “human mistake” on her part may have been to blame for Ms. Romero’s infection. Initially, officials had blamed Ms. Romero for catching the disease following an admission that she may have touched her face with the gloves of her protective suit.

Her brother rejects the notion that Ms. Romero is to blame for catching Ebola and states that attention is being spotlighted on his sister to draw from the real shortages at the hospital.

Angry health workers jeered at Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Friday as he visited the hospital. Angered by his slow response, they threw surgical gloves at him.

Sixteen people were quarantined following Ms. Romero’s infection, including her husband and hairdresser, but none have shown signs of infection.

Ms. Romero contracted the disease late September while caring for a Spanish missionary who had contracted the disease in Africa. The missionary had later died.

A source at the hospital said that Ms. Romero was being treated with an experimental treatment known as ZMapp.

People in Spain took to the streets to support the nurse and protest against the euthanization of her pet dog, Excalibur.
