The new natural gas reservoir Cronos 2 in Cyprus is considered of exceptional quality & exploitable

Cronos represents the third discovery of a natural gas reservoir in Block 6 of the Cypriot EEZ, along with Calypso (2018) and Zeus (2022)

Newsroom February 15 01:47

The Cronos-2 drilling operations within Block 6 of the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus have been successfully completed.

Specifically, the Cypriot Ministry of Energy, Commerce, and Industry announced that the drilling operations conducted by the Italian-French consortium of Eni and Total have been successfully concluded.

The drilling, which took place 160 kilometers off the coast of Cyprus and 3 kilometers from the initial exploration well Cronos-1, confirmed the existence of the same natural gas column with a productive zone within a geological formation exceeding 115 meters.

It also confirmed that it is an extension of the Cronos reservoir, with the same characteristics in carbonate rocks.

During the drilling operations, a full production test (DST) was also conducted, which recorded the excellent quality of natural gas in the reservoir, as well as the high production capacity of the well, estimated to exceed 150 mmscfd (Million Standard Cubic Feet per Day) under production conditions.

At present, the Ministry of Energy and the consortium licensee are exploring ways to optimally exploit the reservoirs, which, it is envisaged, will involve supplying gas to the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus, and Europe.

The cluster of discoveries created is expected to contribute to accelerating their development.

Both Eni and Total have made announcements regarding the successful completion of the Cronos-2 operations.
