SYRIZA: “A government of a 4-month term cannot proceed to debt negotiation”

SYRIZA argues that the government will not be able to get the required votes to elect a President of Hellenic Republic in February leading to early elections

Newsroom October 13 10:24

The main opposition party SYRIZA follows a more critical and strict political line after the outcome of the vote of confidence, since although, government received the confidence vote, it did not manage to strengthen further its ruling majority.

The coalition government received 155 votes, whereas for the presidential elections it needs to get 180 MPs votes.

Therefore, SYRIZA argues that the government will not be able to get the required votes to elect a President of Hellenic Republic in February leading to early elections. Moreover SYRIZA notes that the current government is questioned by its own members.

So, according to the main opposition party, the current government has about 4 months until its term ends and it is not possible for such a government to negotiate on the Greek debt.

SYRIZA’s leader Alexis Tsipras demand the government not to proceed in any negotiations on the Greek debt, which will commit Greece for decades. Moreover, during the debate on the vote of confidence, Mr. Tsipras warned the MPs that a SYRIZA government will not recognize any agreement that current government might achieve.

SYRIZA also stresses that since Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos argue that the Greek debt is sustainable, there is no need to proceed to any negotiations.

Moreover, SYRIZA will continue asking for early elections so as a new government elected and approved by the people will be able to negotiate with the lenders.
