On this day in 1821 the Greeks started the War for Independence against the Ottoman Empire after almost 400 years under their rule.

This was, of course, not the only attempt by the Greeks to be free from their conqueror as in all of this dark period there were more than 10 pan-Hellenic revolutions and numerous (more than 70) local ones.
