The judicial history of the fugitive and former investigator Antonia Ilia extradited to Greece after 19 years

The protagonist of the criminal ring, who has been on the run abroad since 2005, is expected to appear before the prosecutor for the execution of sentences today

Newsroom April 5 02:18

Accompanied by two Interpol officers the protagonist of the criminal ring, Antonia (Tonya) Ilia, landed at El. Venizelos airport last night with an aircraft coming from Great Britain. She has been on the run since 2005 abroad and specifically in England.

From the airport she was transferred, accompanied by police officers of the Greek Police (ELAS), to the Transportation Centre where she stayed overnight.

Today it is expected that the former interrogator Antonia Ilia will be taken to the prosecutor for the issuance of sentences and then to the prosecutor for the execution of sentences, the prosecutor of the Appeals Court, George Vlachos.

Antonia Elias’ final course of action, according to the data so far, is to be transferred to the women’s prison in Eleonas of Thebes, in order to serve her sentence.

Antonia Ilia was extradited to Greece yesterday after 19 years of constantly blocking her extradition to our country.

For the extradition of the former judge in our country, an important, if not decisive, role was played by the recent cooperation meeting between the Minister of Justice George Florides and the British Ambassador to Greece Matthew Lodge.

The meeting took place at the Ministry of Justice and issues of mutual interest were discussed, while on the part of Mr Florides the issue of Antonia Ilia was also on the table.

The former magistrate has been unanimously sentenced by the Five-Member Criminal Court of Appeal to 13 years imprisonment (as in the original case) for her participation in the so called para-judicial circuit and in particular she was convicted for the offence of money laundering.

However, since 2005 the former investigator has been on the run in England.

She initially fled abroad in 2005 and was subsequently arrested by the British authorities and imprisoned in May 2011.

She was released from prison in December 2012 on conditional release and wearing a bracelet. Eventually the decision to extradite her was taken by a court in Westminster, London.

Nevertheless, she managed to delay her return to Greece until yesterday, seeking political asylum from the British authorities.
