The journey of Christos Mastoras transforming into Stelios Kazantzidis unfolding the singer’s life story on the silver screen

Music, affection, familial bonds, companionship, nocturnal escapades, devoted supporters, and significant disputes intricately shape the tapestry of the renowned vocalist's existence

Newsroom June 10 07:49

“Yparcho,” (I Exist)  is not just the title of Stelios Kazantzidis’ legendary song but also the upcoming film depicting the life of this unmatched performer, which has already commenced filming and is anticipated to hit theaters during the Christmas season. Following the massive success of “Eftychia,” a biopic about composer Eftychia Papagiannopoulou, and “Fonissa,” which dominated the box office, Tanweer Productions returns with another ambitious project, heralded as “the biggest Greek film production of the year” focusing on Kazantzidis’ journey from poverty to unparalleled acclaim. Directed by renowned filmmaker Giorgos Tseperopoulos and scripted by experienced writer Katerina Bei, the movie delves into the fascinating life of the folk icon, drawing from insights of individuals close to him and references from Kazantzidis’ own life experiences, including his iconic song “Yparcho,” (I Exist).

In this film, viewers will witness Kazantzidis’ poignant narrative, from his humble beginnings in Pontus and upbringing in Nea Ionia’s refugee camps to his ascent as a celebrated artist. Despite facing numerous challenges, including personal tragedies and artistic disputes, Kazantzidis’ love for music propelled him forward, leading to iconic performances on renowned stages worldwide, such as New York’s Carnegie Hall. Despite withdrawing from live performances during the dictatorship period, Kazantzidis continued to challenge censorship and industry norms, eventually reclaiming his place in the spotlight with monumental albums like “H Zoi Mou Olokliri,” (My Whole Life) and “Sti Dysi,” (In the East) culminating in the release of the legendary record “Yparcho” in 1975.
