Cyprus: Anti-terrorism measures taken after Hezbollah threats – No involvement in hostilities

Cyprus is part of the solution to these problems and not part of the problem, Christodoulides said

Newsroom June 20 01:33

The measures of Cyprus Police anti-terrorism measures are updated and evaluated daily and all appropriate protective measures are taken, depending on the circumstances, the country’s Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis responded on the threats of Lebanese Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah against Cyprus.

In his remarks he referred to President Christodoulides’ statements yesterday that Cyprus is the part of the solution to these problems and not part of the problem.

“With regard to the competence of my own Ministry, I have already said many times that the measures taken, in the terrorism part, are evaluated and updated daily. So it is self-evident and understandable that these statements are also evaluated and the relevant measures are updated on a daily basis, depending on information and developments, let alone why not depending on public statements by the public,” he said.

Asked whether citizens should be reassured, he replied that the Police’s anti-terrorism measures are updated and evaluated on a daily basis and all appropriate protective measures are taken depending on the circumstances.

Earlier, government spokesman Constantine Letibiotis had told Cyprus state radio, reiterating that Cyprus is not involved, nor will it be involved in any military conflicts, therefore, he added, the reports of the Hezbollah leader about the role of Cyprus do not correspond to reality. He reaffirmed that no country will be given permission to conduct military operations through Cyprus. However, Letibiotis noted that there is a peculiarity with the British Bases area, which has a different status, as they are sovereign and are British territory.
