Danger of water shortage in Attica – The level of the lake of Mornos is falling, the sunken village of Kallio was revealed

If the level continues to fall, it will be impossible to pump water, warning that Athens residents may be...forced to move

Newsroom August 24 03:56

Scientists are concerned about the situation that seems to be consolidating in Greece – and especially in Attica – regarding water reserves, which are at dangerously low levels.

Specifically, according to a report on SKAI’s main newscast, water reserves in artificial Lake Mornos, which supplies water to Attica, are low, and the lake’s level has dropped so low due to limited rainfall that the submerged village of Kallio has been revealed.

Emeritus NTUA professor Kimon Hadjibiros said that if the level continues to fall, it will be impossible to pump water, warning that residents of Athens may be forced to…move.

The images captured on August 18 by mechanical engineer George Chalkos show the lake at very low levels. Mr Halkos said the lake level has dropped extremely low, with the difference in height from the overflow being very large.

Lake Mornos was built to supply Athens and in the 1990s, it faced the problem of freezing thanks to the Eynos project, which is supplementing its reserves. However, Hatzibiros stressed that immediate water conservation is needed in the city and everywhere to ensure adequate water supplies.

Scientists are expressing grave concern as the threat of water scarcity is more serious than ever. In the past two years, the lack of rainfall has significantly reduced the water supplies that feed Attica. EYDAP has already activated additional sources as planned.
