ELSTAT Reports Business Turnover Hits €415.5 Billion in 2022

Active Businesses in Greece: 918,724 Enterprises Operate Across Industry, Construction, Trade, and Services in 2022

 In 2022, the total business turnover for enterprises across sectors in industry, construction, trade, and services reached €415.5 billion. The production value was recorded at €271 billion, while the gross value added amounted to €90.9 billion. According to the ELSTAT survey, these enterprises employed a total of 3.4 million individuals, with 2.6 million salaried employees.

Business expenditure on purchases of goods and services in the course of their activities amounted to €349.1 billion, of which €167 billion was for purchases of goods and services to resell them in the state in which they were received, and unprocessed. While they made investments amounting to 12.2 billion euros.

Leading Economic Sectors by Number of Active Enterprises:

In 2022, a total of 918,724 enterprises were active in Greece in the sectors of industry, construction, trade, and services. The sectors with the largest number of enterprises were wholesale and retail trade with 226,009 enterprises, accounting for 24.6% of the total, professional, scientific, and technical services with 156,446 enterprises, accounting for 17%, followed by accommodation and food services with 109,755 enterprises, accounting for 11.9%.

Sectors with highest turnover:

In terms of the total turnover recorded by enterprises in 2022, the wholesale and retail trade sector held the largest share with 38.5% and 160.2 billion; and

followed by the manufacturing and electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply sectors with percentages of 22.2% and 8% and absolute values of €92.1 billion and €33.3 billion, respectively.

Sectors with highest Gross Value Added:

The sectors that contributed the most gross value added to the Greek economy were wholesale and retail trade with 16.9 billion euros (18.6%), manufacturing with 16.6 billion euros (18.2%), and financial and insurance activities with 11.8 billion euros (12.9%).

Sectors with highest personnel costs:

On the personnel cost side, the sectors that recorded the highest expenditure were wholesale and retail trade with 10.3 billion euros (24.3%), manufacturing with 7.5 billion euros (17.6%) and accommodation and food services with 4.6 billion euros (10.8%).

Sectors with highest employment:

In 2022, the wholesale and retail trade sector ranked first in employment, boasting 811,140 employees, which accounted for 23.8% of the total workforce. Of these, 588,424 were salaried employees, representing 23.1% of all salaried positions. Following this sector was the accommodation and food services sector, with 702,911 employees (20.6%), of which 595,509 were salaried employees (23.3% of the total). The manufacturing sector came next, employing 373,258 individuals (11%), with 318,379 of those being salaried employees (12.5%).
