Ministry of Culture General Secretary Lena Mendoni says that the ancient tomb at Amphipolis has definitely been plundered following the discovery of the skeleton in the fourth chamber. She confirmed that the tomb was looted in an interview with MEGA, however she refrained from guessing who the occupant at the tomb might be.

She said that the tomb quite possibly belongs to a prominent Macedonian general. “I can’t say anything else for the simple reason that we aren’t yet in a position to confirm that the occupant was indeed a man,” she said. “It could be a woman.”

Ms. Mendoni doesn’t want to exclude anything concerning the identity of the owner of the tomb. She underlined the fact that the bones in the tomb hadn’t been cremated and that the items adorning the tomb date back to the last part of the 4th Century B.C. without a doubt. “The answers will be given by the skeleton itself once the scientific labwork is done,” she said, adding however that the tomb is unique with a number of characteristics unusual for tombs of this type.

She bases her ascertation regarding the tomb being looted on the fact that no personal items were found near the skeleton. “It seems that the grave robbers took everything,” she said.
