Manousos Manousakis: The director of television hits died

He had been hospitalized recently in the ICU with a respiratory infection – The series he directed left their mark on Greek television.

Newsroom November 21 07:30

At the age of 74, director Manousos Manousakis, one of the most iconic creators of Greek television and cinema, passed away.

According to reports, Manousos Manousakis had been hospitalized recently in the Intensive Care Unit of Hygeia Hospital due to a respiratory infection.

Last Friday, the new series he was directing for ERT, “The Net”, premiered. All his collaborators are shocked by his loss.

Manousos Manousakis was born in 1950 in Athens and studied directing at the London Film School. Upon his return to Greece in the early 1970s, he began his professional journey in cinema.

His first film, Bartholomew (1973), established him as a bold creator. In this film, where he took on a triple role as screenwriter, director, and producer, critical acclaim was not long in coming. It received a special mention at the San Remo Film Festival in 1973, while in Greece, it was banned by the junta.

This was followed by films such as Lords (1978) and The Scarecrow (1985), while he also participated as an actor in films. Although his name became primarily associated with television, Manousakis maintained a dynamic presence in cinema, directing productions such as Your Appointment Has Been Scheduled (1996), The Red Dragon (1998), and the historical drama Ouzeri Tsitsanis (2015).

A Revolution in Greek Television

In the mid-1980s, Manousos Manousakis began his work in television. His early directorial efforts included series such as Kalikantzarodouleies (1985-1986), Miniatures (1986-1987), and Their Best Years (1989). However, widespread recognition came in the 1990s and beyond, when he took on the direction and production of dramatic series for private television networks.
