Weather forecast: Showers and thunderstorms expected today

Today is expected to issue an emergency report of EMF, according to Kolydas - Warning Marousakis for large volume of water in Attica

Newsroom November 29 07:39

The weather is expected to change today, mainly in western and northern Greece, according to forecast data from meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens.

Initially showers are expected in the Ionian Islands and in the rest of the country a few clouds, denser in the west. Gradually rain will occur in areas of the western mainland, with phenomena that will extend from late afternoon and mainly from the evening to most areas of central and northern Greece, western Crete and in some places in the Cyclades. In the west, thunderstorms will also occur, which may be accompanied by hail. Snow will fall in the northern mountains. Further deterioration of the weather is expected overnight towards Saturday, with strong phenomena in some places, while intense bad weather will prevail during the three-day period from Saturday 30/11 to Monday 02/12.

The forecast map shows the estimated cumulative rainfall totals through late Friday night 11/29. totalrains_nov29

The change in the weather in the west and north today was mentioned in a post by Thodoris Kolydas.

The director of EMY, however, stands more on the weekend’s phenomena, where, he says, significant rainfall is predicted in many areas, especially in Central Macedonia and Thessaly.

“The position of the barometric low – which plays an important role for the regions and the intensity with which they will be affected – has not yet been clearly defined. Tomorrow (today) we will have more valid data and will be able to issue a relevant emergency bulletin with better temporal and spatial accuracy. The double maps refer to 0100 on Sunday with the low being in the Central or Southern Ionian region. ECMWF video is also provided

Marousakis: Attica will receive a large volume of water

Attica will face severe and extremely dangerous bad weather in the coming hours, according to OPEN meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis.

The high-pressure field over the country is easing and the way is clearing for a low barometric pressure from the central parts of the continent to move in, which will give a very autumnal pattern with lots of dangerous rains in some places.

“Attention, this bad weather wave is capable of creating problems, especially in maritime coastal areas,” the meteorologist stresses.

Temperatures will drop while notable snowfall will be seen in mountainous areas of the central and northern mainland, with ski resorts dressed in white.

As noted for the weather today, “although conditions will be mild until noon, in the afternoon to evening and mainly in western northwestern Greece will begin the effect of the new wave of bad weather with rain and northwestern thunderstorms.” At the same time warns about the intensity of the phenomena on Saturday, “the weather will become even heavier and Attica is in the areas that will receive a large volume of water. On Saturday, which is also the opening of the Thessaloniki metro, large amounts of water are also expected to fall in the capital. On Sunday, the weather will be quite heavy throughout the country with the setting being winter-like.”

The weather today

Initially, showers are expected in the Ionian Islands and the rest of the country will see a few clouds, denser in the west. Gradual showers will occur in areas of the western mainland, with phenomena that will extend from late afternoon and mainly from the evening to most areas of Central and Northern Greece, Western Crete and the Cyclades. In the west, thunderstorms will also occur, which may be accompanied by hail. Snow will fall in the northern mountains. Further deterioration of the weather is expected on Saturday night, with strong phenomena in some places.

The temperature will range in Western Macedonia from -1 to 14 degrees, in the rest of northern Greece from -2 to 16 degrees, in Thessaly from 3 to 18-19 degrees, in Epirus from 6 to 17 degrees, in the rest of the mainland from 6 to 18-19 degrees, in the Ionian Islands from 8 to 16-17 degrees, in the islands of the North and Northeast Aegean from 4 to 17-18 degrees Celsius and in the remaining island parts of the Aegean from 7 to 19 degrees Celsius, while locally in Crete the maximum will reach 21-22 degrees Celsius.

In the North Aegean, south-southeast winds will blow with intensities up to 4 Beaufort and strengthening in the evening, while in the rest of the Aegean southwest winds will blow with the same intensities. In the Ionian Sea, southwest winds will blow with intensities up to 4 Beaufort, but will gradually increase in places to 5 Beaufort, while in the northern seas from the afternoon, they will shift to northwest winds with a tendency to further increase.
