Kasselakis on MPs leaving SYRIZA: “Democracy in the party was already broken”

"When a party has broken the law by violating the constitutional rights to vote and be elected, one must resist"

Newsroom November 29 01:38

To justify the MPs who have left SYRIZA in recent weeks, Stefanos Kasselakis attempted to justify Stefanos Kasselakis speaking today on the Panteion radio station.

“MPs must be accountable to the people who allowed them to be in parliament. They all derive legitimacy from the people. In a party that has a constitutional responsibility to work for the democratic constitution, when in such a party internal democracy is broken down,” said the president of the Democracy Movement.

“When you exclude the people, who put you in your seat in parliament, hasn’t it changed? Have you not shown a new example of morality? When a party has broken the law by violating the constitutional rights to vote and be elected, someone has to stand up and say it is unpopular and I will not legitimize it.”

He noted, in fact, “I don’t think there’s anyone who would doubt that I would win the election in SYRIZA.”

As he said “We may be in a new beginning but we are a new movement. In the movement you will be equal members, the president is by your side to give you opportunities for the life you want, and we will also take care of grandparents.”
