Rallies held to remember shooting of a teenager

Alexis Grigoropoulos' death on December 6, 2008, has become a symbol of socioeconomic unrest in Greece

Newsroom December 6 01:33

A series of rallies are being held this weekend throughout the country to commemorate the six-year anniversary since the shooting of teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos at the district of Exarhia, the den of anarchism in Greece. The teen had been shot by a policeman, sparking off a series of riots. Each year, the anniversary of his death is commemorated. This year’s events are expected to be more violent following the hunger strike of prisoner Nikos Romanos, a friend of the teenager who had been present at the time of the boy’s death. Mr. Romanos is on the 27th day of a hunger strike demanding that he be given educational furlough to attend classes for a course at a Technological Educational Institute where he gained a place after sitting for university entrance exams while still in prison.

Mr. Romanos had publicized a letter urging protestors to commemorate the death of Grigoropoulos. Rallies are planned at Propylaia at noon on Saturday and 6 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
