Kyriakos Mitsotakis is continuing his strategy of being present at local development projects around Greece, as on the one hand the prime minister wants to get out of the Great Maximus as much as possible and on the other hand he is of the opinion that citizens all over the country should feel that development concerns them equally.

So today he will be in Crete, but not in his hometown of Chania, but in Rethymno and Heraklion, with a large government team of ministers, deputy ministers and secretaries-general with him.

Starting in Rethymno, Mitsotakis will have contacts with hoteliers and operators in the region, and will have coffee with local officials. It should be noted that a few days ago, New Democracy managed to win all four chambers of Crete, which is not the most common in the Greater Isle.

Mitsotakis will then participate in the presentation of the local development plan, which includes a series of critical projects for the wider region and is part of the wider planning of the Grand Maximos government for hundreds of millions of euros in interventions across Greece. At the same time, the contract for the water treatment plant project at the Amari dam will be signed.

After completing his visit to Rethymno, Mitsotakis will move to Heraklion, as the signing of the contract for the restoration of Agios Minas and the new Archaeological Museum of Archanes will take place at 17:00 at the Region of Crete. Immediately afterwards, the opening of the new archaeological exhibition at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion will follow.

Plans around Greece

As “proto thema” wrote on Sunday, the government’s plan for development projects around Greece is not new. Under the supervision of the government’s Presidency and with the participation in many of them of the Deputy Minister of State, Thanasis Kontogeorgis, in cooperation with the party organization of the Southwest, the new regional planning is being implemented and so far 7 plans have already been presented.

As government sources point out, the goal is “proportional and fair distribution of the growth dividend in the region, emphasizing issues of competitiveness and resilience”. In each county visited by a targeted priority-based government team, the local plan is presented and local stakeholders are positioned. Subsequently, the plan is posted on the erga.gov.gr website, where citizens can follow its progress.

The preparation and presentation of local plans will continue in all regional units of the country and in about June 2025 the Prime Minister will present the overall strategy for the coming years. After Crete, the regional units of Epirus, Western Greece and the Aegean Sea will be next in line.
