Kifisos: Speleologists discovered three lakes beneath the Kifisos river (video)

The discovery was made by speleologists from the "Geomythiki" team – They express concerns about the impact on stability

Newsroom January 3 10:21

Members of the “Geomythiki” team, who had previously discovered two other lakes, have made the discovery of a total of three lakes beneath the Kifisos river.

The third and largest lake, as explained by the team members in a video they posted on YouTube, is located at the point where the Kifisos riverbed meets the Eschatia stream, near the Peristeri vehicle inspection center (KTEO).

As seen in the footage they recorded, the lake was formed due to the destruction of the riverbed in that area, which they noted had a width of 5 centimeters. This lake even appears to have fish.

The first of the lakes was discovered by the same team members in January 2021. It was located near the pedestrian bridge in Perissos and Vickela Street in Patissia, immediately after the underground confluence of Kifisos with the Podonifti river.

Six months later, in July 2023, the same team discovered a second lake beneath the Kifisos, located near the Athens Avenue area. They entered from the Rendi area and walked 3.5 kilometers under the National Road.

Speaking to “Kathimerini,” the members of the speleology team from “Geomythiki” raised concerns about the stability of the area: “The issue of stability is very serious, and in our opinion, the water needs to be pumped out, and an assessment of the damage should be made by engineers. The underground pipe in this third lake is in the worst condition we have seen.”
