Mystery with the suicide of businessman Drakos Maris in Crete – What are the authorities investigating

Despite facing health issues, his associates and friends claim he was planning for the future, both professionally and personally

Newsroom January 30 03:20

A veil of mystery surrounds the suicide of businessman Drakos Maris, who was found dead at his holiday home in Fodele, Heraklion, having shot himself with a hunting rifle. Although authorities have officially classified his death as a suicide, police are still considering all possibilities, as those close to him insist that there were no warning signs leading up to this tragic event.

“Only his wife knows what drove him to take his own life,” a close associate told protothema.gr. While he had been dealing with health issues, colleagues and friends maintain that he had shown no signs of despair. On the contrary, he was actively planning for his future, both professionally and personally.

According to reports, authorities have obtained video footage showing Drakos Maris arriving alone at the family’s holiday home on Tuesday night at 8:00 PM and closing the door behind him. From that moment until the following morning, no one else appears at the property. On Wednesday morning, his wife, worried because he wasn’t answering his phone, went to the house and found him dead, with his hunting rifle beside him. The scene she encountered was devastating, and she immediately alerted the authorities.

Born in 1970 in Fodele, Drakos Maris embarked on his entrepreneurial journey in 1995 with the establishment of OLYMPIA PALACE in Linoperamata. In the early 2000s, he became a partner in the well-known club Envy, owned a luxury yacht, and had shares in various other nightclubs. Employees at these venues describe him as a generous man with a big heart, always willing to help those in need.

At the same time, he was actively involved in local government, having served as Deputy Mayor and Municipal Councilor in both the Municipality of Gazi and the Municipality of Malevizi. He was known for his generosity and his willingness to support the local community. Unlike other members of his family, who had occasionally attracted law enforcement attention, he had chosen to steer clear of past controversies and forge his own path.

The businessman was married and a father of two children, both excelling in secondary school. The tragedy that has struck his family has left them in profound grief, as no one can comprehend what led him to take his own life.

Drakos Maris’ funeral took place today at 1:00 PM at the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen in Pera Galinos, where relatives, friends, and colleagues gathered to bid a final farewell to a man who left his mark on Crete’s business and local government scene.

The police investigation is ongoing, although so far, foul play has been ruled out. Nevertheless, questions remain unanswered.
