Politico: EU’s 26 unite on Ukraine, Hungary stands alone – Consensus on defense at Summit

Hungary’s Orbán refuses to sign on military aid to Ukraine

Newsroom March 6 10:15

At the latest EU summit, European leaders reached an agreement on defense and strategic matters, with the majority of member states supporting military aid to Ukraine—despite opposition from Hungary. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán refused to sign the EU conclusions regarding military aid to Ukraine, resulting in approval by 26 out of the 27 EU leaders. The agreement includes measures to strengthen European defense, increase defense spending, and provide up to €150 billion in loans to member states for defense-related investments.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the summit, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire. He proposed two separate forms of cessation of hostilities: (a) a ceasefire in the air and against infrastructure (i.e., no attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure) and (b) a ceasefire at sea, meaning a halt to military operations in the Black Sea.
