Roussopoulos and Guterres meet in New York, discuss artificial intelligence

The President of the Council of Europe has proposed to the UN Secretary General to organise an international conference on issues related to artificial intelligence and the dangers for democracy from its indiscriminate use

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Theodoros Roussopoulos, is in New York, where he is attending the 69th session of the UN Commission on the promotion of women’s rights.

The 69th edition of the UN Women’s Conference on the promotion of women’s rights

On this occasion, Mr Roussopoulos met, for the second time during his term of office, with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

“I shared with the UN Secretary General my idea to organise an international conference in December in London on issues relating to artificial intelligence and the dangers to democracy from its indiscriminate use. We also discussed issues relating to the overall decline of democracy due to populism in many parts of our planet and the dangers that are now prevalent due to those who believe that the power of arms or money should prevail over the power of democracy and law,” Mr Roussopoulos said after the meeting with Mr Guterres.

As part of his visit to New York, Roussopoulos held meetings with the Archbishop of America Hopeful and UN Deputy Secretaries General Amandeep Singh Gill, responsible for digital and emerging technologies, with whom he discussed artificial intelligence and the emerging risks to democracy, Rosemary DiCarlo, Commissioner for Political and Peace Affairs, with whom he discussed the Cyprus problem and the war in Ukraine, and Guy Bernard Ryder, Commissioner for Political Affairs, with whom he discussed the historic Pact for the Future agreement adopted by world leaders during the Summit for the Future.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, Mr Roussopoulos will visit Washington, D.C., where he is scheduled to meet with Senators and representatives of think tanks and will deliver a lecture at George Washington University on the Council of Europe, human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
