Karampelas: “We gave it our all—this team hasn’t reached it peak yet”

AEK’s young guard, Zois Karampelas, spoke about his team’s hard-fought victory over Würzburg that secured their spot in the Basketball Champions League Top 8

Newsroom March 12 09:45

AEK delivered a statement win against Germany’s Würzburg, making it a perfect 4-for-4 in Group 1 of the Round of 16. With this result, they officially punched their ticket to the next stage of the competition. Speaking on EOK WebRadio’s “Instant Replay,” Karampelas broke down the team’s performance and their relentless fight for victory.

On the win over Würzburg

“It was an incredibly tough game. The last two days weren’t easy for us—we were dealing with a stomach bug going around the team. Until the last moment, we didn’t even know who’d be able to step on the court. But aside from Kuzminskas and Arsenopoulos, most of us pulled through and gave everything we had. Considering the circumstances, this win means even more, both in terms of how we got it and what it means for the rest of our European campaign.”

On the second-half comeback

“At halftime, we sat down and analyzed our mistakes. Our defense wasn’t where it needed to be, and we lacked energy. But with the sheer willpower of the team and the boost we got from our fans, we knew we couldn’t lose. In the second half, we stepped up with some incredible defense, and by the end, we all celebrated together. The coach was really happy with us.”

On their approach to the game

“Würzburg is a tough opponent. They play at a high pace, shoot a lot, and started the game extremely well. On top of that, our energy was low because of the virus. But we knew that if we took it step by step, made the right defensive plays, and dictated the pace, we could turn the game in our favor. And that’s exactly what we did.”

On the four-guard lineup

“That adjustment was crucial. Our coach knows how to handle different situations—his experience in moments like these is invaluable. We have 12 players ready to contribute, and everyone stepped up. The energy and determination we brought were the keys to flipping the game.”

Comparing the Würzburg win to the Bonn victory

“Each game had its own significance. The win over Bonn was huge because it put us in a position to fight for qualification against Würzburg. But last night’s win was different—it was pure heart and soul. We left everything on the court. The atmosphere was electric, and the fans gave us wings. Honestly, I don’t know if we would have done it without them.”

On the team’s progress

“Our performances reflect our identity. We’re a team that works extremely hard. After every game, we analyze and correct our mistakes. Offensively, we have talent and can score when needed, but ultimately, defense wins games. That’s where we’re putting in the most work. Game by game, we’re improving. We still have so much more to give.”

On the support from the fans

“Our fans are our sixth man. Yesterday, I don’t know if we could have pulled it off without them. They gave us so much energy. I’ve been with the team since last year, and I’ve never experienced anything like it. It was unreal.”

On the difference between this season and last

“Last year was a rollercoaster—it wasn’t great. Those of us who were here wanted to prove that last season was just a bad chapter. We’re on the right path now, but I truly believe this team hasn’t reached its full potential yet.”

On coach Dragan Sakota

“It’s an honor to play under Coach Sakota. We all knew his history with the club and his experience when he arrived. It’s a huge opportunity for me to learn from him every day. Whatever he asks of me, I’ll give 100% on the court.”

AEK continues its European journey with momentum, proving that they are a force to be reckoned with.
