The Donald Trump has again expressed his support for Marine Le Pen, in a new post he published a few hours ago on Truth Social.
Days after the Le Pen‘s was convicted of misusing European funds and a court ruling sealing her ban from all public office for the next five years, the US president called her again the victim of a “witch hunt.”
The leader of the National Rally (RN) had emerged as a favorite for the 2027 presidential election, and her conviction last Monday caused a major uproar on the French political scene and beyond.
In addition to being stripped of her right to vote, she was given a four-year prison sentence, two of which were suspended and the other two under house arrest with a bracelet, as well as a €100,000 fine. Le Pen’s legal team announced its intention to file an appeal.
The US president stresses in his post that Le Pen’s case is another instance in which Europe’s left-wing forces are launching a legal attack on a political opponent to suppress freedom of expression. Commenting that similar tactics were used against him in the past, Trump says of Le Pen, “I don’t know her personally, but I appreciate the fact that she fought hard for many years. She suffered defeats, but she kept fighting and now, just before a major victory, she was ‘busted’ for a minor offense that she probably didn’t even know about. Sounds like an accounting error to me.”
“All of this is disastrous for France and for the great French people, regardless of their political beliefs,” the US president added, closing his post with the slogan “Free Marine Le Pen”.
