SYRIZA, strengthened by its clear victory in the European Elections will attempt to undermine the government’s ability to implement critical political choices. In order to do so, the left party is planning to create a climate that resembles an extended election period, giving the impression that this government has an expiration date which is drawing close.
Alexis Tsipras is adopting an even more aggressive political attitude and claims that, since governmental policies failed to get the people’s approval, there is not legitimacy for the coalition government to fulfill its commitments to the troika. The leader of the opposition is going to base his strategy to the popular verdict, as it was expressed in last Sunday’s elections, pointing out that the government is now supported by the minority of Greek voters and, therefore, it is obliged to abandon policies such as further cuts in wages and pensions, privatizations and other austerity measures.
Mr. Tsipras’ strategy will be to cautiously press for elections, calling on the government to realize that it is their obligation to resort to early elections to solve the problem of ‘discord’ between the electorate and parliament, that was recorded at the last elections.
SYRIZA’s aim is to pave the road for early elections next spring, when the presidential election is scheduled to take place, rejecting any consensus proposal before the solution of the main political problem. This means he will accept the need for consensus and may not object to the people that will be nominated for the presidency of the Republic, but on the condition that a new parliament and a new government is elected first.
SYRIZA’s political secretariat is scheduled to meet on Thursday, to discuss the election results and to determine the next steps for the party.
