Monday, June 9, 2025, the feast of the Holy Spirit, is not a public holiday for all employees. Shops and supermarkets are expected to remain open, as they do every year, although in some areas they remain closed due to local custom or municipal decisions.

Holy Spirit Holiday 2025: Which Stores and Services Operate Normally

Holy Spirit Monday is an official holiday in many Christian countries around the world. In Greece, it was originally established as a holiday only for public sector employees, since the Holy Spirit is considered their patron. Over time, the holiday has been adopted by several private sector industries as well.

The feast of the Holy Spirit is an official public holiday for the public sector and banks, while retail stores remain open and operate normally. Supermarkets, bakeries, and grocery stores also operate as usual.

Who Does Not Work on Holy Spirit Monday

Certain professional sectors observe Holy Spirit Monday as a day off, and employees do not work. These include:

  • Bookstores
  • Diagnostic centers
  • Journalists
  • Foremen
  • Elderly care homes
  • Industrial and shop electricians
  • Doormen
  • Tobacco industry workers
  • Clinics
  • Lumber trade stores (in Athens, Piraeus, and surrounding areas)
  • Oil companies
  • Shipping agencies
  • Industrial radio engineers and technicians
  • Radio stations
  • Tugboat and salvage companies
  • TV stations
  • TV technicians in Northern Greece
  • Printers of regional newspapers
  • Newspaper loaders
  • Secondary, higher, and tertiary-level tutoring centers and foreign language institutes
  • Phototypesetters
  • Industrial unit operators
  • Stone, marble, and construction quarry workers

Holy Spirit Monday: Pay Provisions for Those Who Work

For employees in sectors where the day is considered a holiday but they are required to work, the law provides for additional pay. Specifically:

  • Salaried employees who work are entitled to a bonus on top of their monthly wage.
  • Those not working due to the holiday suffer no wage deduction.
  • Daily wage workers receive their full daily wage, whether they work or not.

If a company, despite having declared the day a holiday, decides to operate, the following applies:

  • Full-time employees are entitled to an additional payment equal to 1/25 of their monthly salary.
  • Daily wage workers receive an additional daily wage.
  • In all cases, there is a 75% surcharge on the hourly wage for work on a public holiday.
