European Parliament President Martin Schulz kept up the pressure on the new Greek government on Sunday, warning that “if Mr. Tsipras thinks that he can get rid of the troika and that Europeans will continue to finance his election program, then he should think again.”
The comments came in an interview carried by the German paper Die Welt.
Schulz reveals that during his visit in Athens on Thursday he called on Greek PM Alexis Tsipras to stop the sniping against Berlin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel and not to reject EU standards or take unilateral actions.
“Instead of insisting on Maximalist demands, he should discuss with us how to generate investments for Greece”, Schulz said.
While referring to new government’s plans, Schulz said he hasn’t fully examined them, although here lies the opportunity to possibly create a “constructive way”.
