Irini Mourtzoukou has confessed to the murders of the three infants, and her sister: “When I argued with my family, my mind would shut down”

Irini Mourtzoukou claimed she accidentally killed her second child – In the other cases, she acted deliberately – Her first murder was that of her sister when she was 14 years old

Newsroom July 9 10:34

Irini Mourtzoukou has confessed to the murders of the infants and is being transferred to Patras, where she will appear before a prosecutor and investigating magistrate.

Specifically:

  • On February 6, 2014, in Argos, Irini’s one-and-a-half-year-old sister dies. The cause of death is listed as a respiratory infection and interstitial pneumonitis.
  • On February 4, 2021, in Achaia, Irini is looking after a friend’s 6-month-old baby while the child’s mother, Katerina, is away. The forensic investigation found interstitial pneumonitis, and the baby also had epileptic episodes.
  • On June 19, 2022, in Achaia, Irini is caring for her own 19-day-old baby at home. The infant dies. The forensic report concludes the cause of death was interstitial pneumonitis, and the genetic testing came back clear.
  • On October 17, 2023, at the “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital, her 2-month-old baby girl dies. The hospital lists cardiac arrest as the cause of death. The coroner notes epileptic seizures and strong medication; the death is attributed to the seizures. Further genetic testing was ordered.

“When I argued with my family, my mind would shut down,” she reportedly told police officers.

Her involvement had already emerged through testimonies from the infants’ relatives, doctors at Athens’ pediatric hospitals, the Karamandaneio Hospital in Patras, and the General Hospital in Amaliada. Medical findings from those hospitals further indicated the 25-year-old’s connection to the cases.

According to well-informed sources speaking to protothema.gr, the prosecutor and the investigating magistrate handling the case evaluated the conclusions of a pulmonologist, a neurologist, and two forensic pathologists. Combined with the testimonies they had collected, they determined that an arrest warrant should be issued, as the accused poses a risk of committing similar acts if left free.
