Caretta caretta returns to Chania’s coastline to nest – A powerful reminder of marine conservation

The photo shows the turtle digging a hole between the deck chairs to lay its eggs

Newsroom July 11 11:08

Swimmers who happened to be at the beach of Platanias in Chania last Tuesday morning were treated to an unusual and wonderful sight, as a loggerhead turtle emerged from the sea, dug a nest in the sand, and laid its eggs.

Many people on the beach, which is part of the Natura 2000 network, were amazed to see the marine visitor determined to carry out her mission, defying human presence.

The “Active Citizens of Platanias” Facebook account posted a video showing the turtle carefully digging in the sand and laying its eggs among umbrellas and sunbeds.

Along with the video, important guidelines for the protection of sea turtles were published, especially during this period when nests are multiplying on many beaches in Crete and throughout the Mediterranean. As a reminder, noise, bright lights, and human interference can disorient or frighten the mother turtle, making the nesting process more difficult. Even more at risk are the baby turtles, who are being asked to make the first – and most dangerous – journey of their lives to the sea.

Unfortunately, most don’t even make it to the water, as they become disoriented by artificial lights or fall prey to predatory birds and fish. For this reason, experts urge beachgoers to exercise extra caution by limiting noise and lights.
