Japan: Fireworks accident at a festival – Fireworks launching boats caught fire

Five workers dived into the sea in order to save themselves, while there were no serious injuries

Newsroom August 5 05:21

Panic ensued Monday night (4/8) in Yokohama, Japan, when two ships, specifically barges used to launch fireworks at a summer festival, were engulfed in flames.

Specifically, the fire broke out on two of the eight ships during the launching of the fireworks, and the event was immediately halted.

According to the local Yokohama Port Authority, five workers, who were on board one of the barges, jumped into the sea to escape the flames and were rescued shortly afterwards. One of them was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Japanese media reported.

Organizers of the summer festival told investigators that “the control of fireworks on the barges was lost,” with police and the coast guard investigating the cause of the incident

The festival program called for the launch of about 20,000 fireworks in 25 minutes. However, just 20 minutes into the show, the music was cut off and attendees were told the event was cancelled for safety reasons.
