The 17-year-old man arrested yesterday in Alimos and accused of stealing the baby from Kaminia and abandoning it in a supermarket trolley near the Acropolis, admitted to two snatchings and told police that “I don’t digest Roma” and “I wanted to show that they don’t take care of their children”. The teenager, last May, had snatched another baby from inside a supermarket in Omonia, which he then abandoned in Alimos, next to a rubbish bin.
According to reports, authorities got on his trail by tracking down a purchase he had made with a card at the supermarket in Omonia, where she had snatched the other baby last May.
From that purchase, authorities were able to identify him and track him down yesterday afternoon in Alimos, where he resides, and arrested him.
According to protothema.gr, he even confessed to the act, saying he did it because he “can’t stomach gypsies” and because he wanted to “show how useless they are.”
In addition, it was learnt that the young man also posed as a bus conductor from time to time.
In addition to the 17-year-old, the alleged mother of the infant, just 30 days old, was also arrested. The woman reported to the Kamini Police Station that an unknown person snatched the child from her arms while she was shopping at a supermarket. However, police officers handcuffed her as a case was filed against her for neglect of supervision of a minor.
The baby was found shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday by a 54-year-old woman of Albanian descent, who spotted him in a supermarket cart in a park on Kalliroi Avenue. Police were immediately notified, and the infant was taken to the Children’s Hospital, where he was provided with the necessary medical attention.
Video of the chase of the man who grabbed the baby in Piraeus
Protothema.gr has brought to light a video of the moment when a Roma woman, along with two people, chases the man who had grabbed the baby and was running away. In the video document, the woman is seen with two young Roma men running in the opposite direction towards Aigaleo street chasing the man, who is holding the stroller with the child. A short time before, the man had approached the woman with the baby, urging her to buy baby milk from a pharmacy near the port of Piraeus.
The two entered the pharmacy, and the offender asked her to go to the kiosk and get two bottles of water. As soon as the woman walked away from the baby stroller, he grabbed it and started running in an unknown direction.
When the woman realized they had been removed, she went to the Caminia Police Department and reported the abduction of the infant. Four hours later, the child was found by a 54-year-old woman from Albania, who found him in a supermarket trolley in a park near the Acropolis.
In another documentary video broadcast by Mega, the mother can be seen walking with the stroller, and the man who later grabbed the stroller with the baby walking close by.
They have a distance between them, but they seem to be talking, and then they enter the pharmacy.
The woman who claimed to be the child’s mother was arrested, charged with neglect of custody of a minor, and taken to the prosecutor yesterday. The infant remains at Agia Sophia Children’s Hospital.
She threw the bus conductor
Interestingly, as far as the person is concerned, the 17-year-old is the same person who posed as a bus conductor in Vari, collecting alleged fines en route. The incident was recorded in June at the “Asteria” stop on Poseidonos Avenue, and the Coordination Centre of the “ARIADNI” project was immediately mobilised and alerted the relevant services. The minor was in the area and brought him to the local Department of Prosecution, where it was found that in his possession were a radio, a block of offences, a fake supervision card, and a sum of money. At the same time, his parent was also arrested at the time for neglect of supervision of a minor.
