NATO: Emergency meeting over violations in Estonia – Warns Russia with Article 5 activation

“The invasion is part of a broader pattern of increasingly reckless behavior” – The North Atlantic Council places “full responsibility” on Russia for these actions and calls on it to stop

Newsroom September 23 04:40

NATO sent a message to Russia to halt its “irresponsible” and “reckless” behavior toward member states, condemning Moscow’s violations on September 19, when three armed Russian MiG-31 jets breached Estonian airspace for more than ten minutes.

Warning with the activation of Article 5 – the collective defense clause, which states that an attack on a NATO member is considered an attack on all – the North Atlantic Council, which met at Estonia’s request, expressed “full solidarity” with Allies whose airspace has been violated.

“Russia bears full responsibility for these actions, which are escalatory, risk miscalculations, and endanger lives. These actions must stop,” emphasized the North Atlantic Council.

“NATO’s response will remain strong”

NATO stated that its response “to Russia’s reckless actions will remain strong.” In this context, on September 12, the “Eastern Sentry” operation was launched to strengthen NATO’s posture across the entire Eastern flank. “We will further enhance our capabilities and strengthen our deterrence and defense posture, including effective air defense.”

In a firm tone, the North Atlantic Council stressed that Russia “should have no doubt: NATO and the Allies will use, in accordance with international law, all necessary military and non-military means to defend and deter any threat from any direction. We will continue to respond in the manner, at the time, and in the place of our choosing. Our commitment to Article 5 remains unbreakable.”

At the same time, NATO signaled that Alliance members will not be swayed by Russia’s irresponsible actions and will continue to support Ukraine.
