The German daily Suddeutsche Zeitung on Friday claimed that a request by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to meet with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker ahead of Monday’s Eurogroup session was rejected by the latter. The newspaper, citing government sources in Athens, said Tsipras asked for the urgent meeting during a telephone conversation on Thursday.
The report cited the fact that the European Commission neither confirmed nor denied the report, with a spokeswoman merely saying that the two leaders have constant telephone contacts.
The two leaders will now wait for Monday’s Eurogroup and are likely to meet following the outcome of this meeting. The newspaper reports that Tsipras’ request is an “unusual call for help”, as Athens “struggles day by day to avoid bankruptcy.”
