Govt: Memorandums have failed, time for a political solution

Alexis Tsipras is expected to reiterate his government’s commitment to a program of reforms, stressing that Athens keeps its part of the deal

Newsroom March 16 09:39

The negotiations between the Greek government and its European partners are in their most critical stage, as pressure mounts on the Greek side to continue the austerity policies of the memorandums (bailout agreements) signed by the previous governments, in order to cover the new fiscal and financial gaps that have come to light.

Despite the imminent threat of asphyxiation of the country’s economy, the Greek government seems determined not to follow the “austerity recipe” that is strongly recommended by the European creditors, as it has proven ineffective in the past, leading the country to an impasse.

The demand for a political solution to Greece’s debt problem, based on the Eurogroup decision of February 20, will be put on the table by Prime Minister Alexis at Thursday’s summit meeting.

Alexis Tsipras is expected to reiterate his government’s commitment to a program of reforms, stressing that Athens keeps its part of the deal and inviting the partners to do the same, namely to support the reform effort, by adopting a fair attitude towards the country.
