Kalymnos: a must-see destination for adventure lovers

Thanks to its rugged terrain, Kalymnos has become extremely popular among nature enthusiasts

Newsroom March 17 12:08

Kalymnos, the fourth largest island in the Dodecanese chain in the eastern Aegean, is the ideal destination for nature lovers, as it offers sheer cliff walls, mystical caves and amazing beaches as well as a wide selection of other outdoor activities.

Sponge harvesting has long been the economic staple on Kalymnos, generating wealth for the island and making it famous throughout the Mediterranean.

Thanks to its rugged terrain, Kalymnos has increasingly become extremely popular among outdoorsmen and naturalists. If you like climbing, scuba diving and mountain hiking, this is an ideal place for you in the Aegean.

Chora

The picturesque port-town of Pothia is the largest urban area on Kalymnos, built amphitheatrically over the foot and slopes of two hills and the valley between them. Stroll through the city’s narrow streets to admire the old mansions and the one-storey sponge-harvesters’ houses.

Among the churches that stand out are Sotiras Christos, built in 1861 and Agios Nikolaos church. The town also boasts several fascinating attractions, including the Archaeological Museum, the Maritime Museum, the castle of Chrysocheria, built in the 15th century and the landmark of the island, along with its three stone-built windmills!
