A major uproar has erupted in Turkey since yesterday because of a banner displayed at the “Stark Arena” during the Euroleague Round 12 matchup between Partizan and Fenerbahçe.

The banner raised by Serbian fans showed the death of Sultan Murad I at the hands of the Serbian knight Miloš Obilić during the Battle of Kosovo in 1389.

This triggered strong reactions both within the Turkish team and across the country.

In fact, a member of Fenerbahçe’s management, Cem Çirici, expressed the team’s strong displeasure over the incident, noting that they expect a warm welcome from Turkish fans in the return match in Istanbul: “This choreography was already set up when we were training in the arena. We filed the necessary complaints with the authorities, but they allowed it to be displayed. After the game, we also spoke with officials and requested clarification on the matter.

Tomorrow, we will once again submit our complaint to the relevant authorities. But the best answer came from our players on the court. We hope to welcome them warmly in the return match.”

The reigning European champion (Fenerbahçe) easily defeated Partizan 99–87 and climbed to 8th place with a 7–5 record, dropping the Serbian team to 18th place with a 4–8 record.
