War in Ukraine: New US-Russia talks in Miami this weekend

The new talks are organised after Zelensky spoke of "progress" in the effort to reach a compromise between Kiev and Washington on the content of the plan proposed to Moscow

Newsroom December 18 01:46

New talks between Russian and US envoys on the war in Ukraine are scheduled to take place this weekend in Miami, Florida, a White House official announced yesterday (Wednesday).

The U.S. presidency did not disclose the delegations’ configurations.

However, according to a report published on Politico’s website, Washington will be represented by US presidential special envoy Steve Whitcoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, and Moscow by Kremlin envoy for economic affairs Kirill Dmitriev.

The new talks are being organized after the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenski spoke of “progress” in the effort to reach a compromise between Kiev and Washington on the content of a plan proposed to Moscow to end the war, following meetings on Sunday and Monday between US, Ukrainian and European officials in Berlin. Zelensky, however, warned at the same time that Russia was preparing for a new “year of war” in 2026.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, for his part, reiterated yesterday that the goals of the attack on Ukraine “will be achieved without a doubt.”

The details of the US plan after the modifications to which it was submitted to Berlin are not known. Kiev protests because the text provides for territorial concessions on its part.

The original text was described by the Ukrainian government and Kiev’s European allies as too favorable to the Kremlin.
