Marinakis: There will be two meetings with farmers, the Prime Minister cannot work with ultimatums

As the government spokesman said, there will be two meetings because "they (the national committee) did not want to be at the meeting with some others"

Newsroom January 12 01:00

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis provided clarifications regarding the two meetings the government has invited farmers to attend tomorrow.

As Marinakis explained, two separate meetings are planned because “they (the members of the national committee) did not want to participate in a joint meeting with certain other representatives. However, the government—and especially the Prime Minister—cannot operate under ultimatums.”

“The objective is to meet with all representatives of the primary sector. Therefore, we are prepared to hold two meetings in the presence of the Prime Minister: the first with the initial group of representatives involved in the mobilizations, as they requested, and the second with the remaining representatives who do not wish to participate in the first meeting,” the spokesperson said during Monday afternoon’s briefing of political editors.

He added that the government is awaiting the names of the participants for security reasons. “We have made it clear that, for the meeting to be constructive rather than an open-ended gathering, there must be a maximum of 20 participants. Once we receive the names, the Prime Minister and the rest of the government team will meet with the farmers’ representatives tomorrow, most likely at noon,” Marinakis stated.

Finally, he emphasized that “no additional measures will be introduced beyond those that have already been announced.”
