In front of leaders and representatives from more than 40 countries, proceedings began today in Washington at the Peace Council for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, which has been devastated by war.
Host Donald Trump, in his opening speech, chose to begin with his favorite — though of questionable credibility — claim that he has helped end eight wars, although he admits that the one in Ukraine has eluded him.
Watch the American president’s speech live:
He did, however, refer to Iran: “We may take it one step further, or maybe not,” was his cryptic comment. He continued by saying that “we might make a deal, but you’ll probably find out within the next 10 days.”
As for the Council — which many European countries chose to avoid — Trump said that “there has never been anything to match its prestige.”
Before the meeting, Trump had said that Council members had pledged to provide $5 billion for reconstruction — an amount that falls far short of the estimated $70 billion needed to rebuild the Palestinian territories.
Members are also expected to announce that they will provide thousands of uniformed personnel for international stabilization and policing forces in the region.
