The Greek Ministry of Interior and Google have signed a new memorandum of cooperation to further strengthen AI education for public administration staff. The initiative, running through December 31, 2026, aims to deepen practical AI skills and digital work capabilities among civil servants.

Since 2019, the Ministry has been training public employees in digital skills and AI, with 85,772 participants recorded from 2023 to 2025. Attendance in AI-focused programs alone reached 35,839 in 2024–2025, demonstrating strong acceptance and engagement. Training has been delivered via 77 online webinars on YouTube Live, averaging 1,130 participants per session, focusing on Practical AI and Prompting. Surveys show 94.2% of participants plan to apply their new skills, while 85.65% recognize the practical utility of AI in daily work. Satisfaction rates were 90.6% for content clarity and 89.3% overall.

The new phase will prioritize practical AI skills and integration into everyday administrative tasks, aligned with national digital governance strategies and EU developments in AI. The initiative aims to improve productivity, information management, and decision-making within the public sector.

Minister of Interior Thodoris Livanios highlighted that the program demonstrates a long-term commitment to a modern, efficient, and digital public administration, emphasizing measurable results and high acceptance of AI programs. Deputy Minister Vivi Charalampogianni stressed the strategic objective of empowering public employees to leverage AI for better service delivery to citizens.

From Google, Peggy Antonakou, Regional General Director for Southeast Europe, noted that Greece is actively leading, not just adapting, in AI adoption for the public sector. “Nearly 36,000 civil servants have already participated in AI training,” she said, highlighting that 85% now view AI as a practical ally in daily tasks. The 2026 program, supported by Google’s Gemini AI, moves beyond digital literacy to digital empowerment, reducing bureaucracy and allowing public servants to focus on citizen service.

This collaboration reinforces Greece’s role as a regional AI leader in public administration, blending technology, education, and governance for tangible impact on citizens’ everyday experience.
