Meeting between Christodoulides and the head of the British intelligence services, the background

The visit is taking place at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean – Blaise Metreweli is the first woman to head MI6

Manolis Kalatzis March 6 12:10

The presence of the head of the British intelligence services in Nicosia confirms London’s increased interest in the security of the Eastern Mediterranean.

The meeting between the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Christodoulides, and the head of the British foreign intelligence service, Blaise Metreweli, is currently underway at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, at a time of particularly heightened geopolitical tensions in the region.

The meeting had been officially announced yesterday; however, shortly afterwards the announcement was withdrawn from the Cypriot President’s schedule, a move that gave the meeting a discreet character.

The first woman to head MI6

Blaise Metreweli assumed the role of head of the Secret Intelligence Service — the British intelligence service better known as MI6 — in the autumn of 2025. She is the first woman to lead the service since its establishment.

MI6 is responsible for gathering intelligence abroad and constitutes a key pillar of the United Kingdom’s national security apparatus, with operational activity in dozens of countries.

Before taking over the leadership of the service, Metreweli held the position of Director of Technology and Innovation, responsible for modernising the service’s operational tools and technological capabilities.

The visit of the MI6 chief to Nicosia comes at a time of intense instability in the Middle East and heightened concerns about security in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Cyprus is at the centre of developments due to its geographical position as well as the presence of British military bases in Akrotiri and Dhekelia, which constitute a significant operational hub for the United Kingdom’s operations in the region.

Although details of the meeting’s agenda have not been made public, it is considered almost certain that the discussions are focusing on security issues, intelligence sharing, and the broader situation in the Middle East, which directly affects the security of the Republic of Cyprus.
