Farewell to a great Greek composer who leaves behind a plethora of much-loved songs

Greek composer Vasilis Dimitriou died at the age of 70 leaving behind him a wide range of soundtracks. His work has been interpreted by Greece’s greatest singers such as George Dalaras, marinella, Haris Alexiou, Dimitra Galani, Sophia Bellou, Manolis Mitsias, Stratos Dionysiou, Eleni Vitali, Aphrodite Manou and many more.

Songs like “Maria me ta kitrina” and “Halasia mou” are widely known to Greeks, however the work he will be most known for are soundtracks for TV series such as “Vamena Kokkina Malia” (Dyed Red Hair) and “Matomena Homata” (Bloodied Sand).

His funeral is to take place on Wednesday, April 29, at 2 p.m. at the 1st cemetary of Athens.

Born on April 12, 1945, in Athens, Dimitriou has composed music for the theater, television, radio, cinema, ballet and contemporary music for large and small ensembles. A member of the National Theater Translaters and Composers Association (EETh.S) and the Union of Greek Song Creators (EDET), Dimitriou was a founding member of the Panhellenic Music Association and the Center for Study and Research of Greek Theater – Theater Museum.

Over 350 songs and 28 personal recordings (LP & CD), bear his name with collaborations with lyricists such as Nikos Gatsos, Manos Eleftehriou, Lefteris Papadopoulos, Vangelis Goufas, Akos Daskalopoulos, Yiannis Logothetis, Pablo Neruda etc.
