The Hellenic Initiative raises over $1 million for Greece at landmark Chicago events

The Hellenic Initiative’s fundraising weekend, highlighted by a sold-out concert by Konstantinos Argiros, brings together thousands of Greek-Americans in one of the largest diaspora gatherings supporting Greece

More than $1 million was raised for Greece during a special fundraising weekend in Chicago organized by The Hellenic Initiative (THI), culminating in a sold-out concert by acclaimed Greek artist Konstantinos Argiros. The event has been described as the largest gathering in history of the Greek diaspora in support of Greece.

The highlight of the weekend took place on Saturday, March 7, at the United Center. The evening began with a black-tie dinner hosted by THI Vice Chairman John S. Koudounis in honor of renowned investor and philanthropist John P. Calamos Sr. During the event, Calamos was presented with the THI Lifetime Achievement Award by Koudounis and THI President George P. Stamas in recognition of his outstanding contributions to business, philanthropy and the Greek diaspora.

The dinner brought together leaders of the Greek-American community, philanthropists, business executives and supporters of Greece. Following the awards ceremony, guests joined more than 13,000 attendees at the sold-out concert by Konstantinos Argiros, which benefited The Hellenic Initiative.

The celebrations began the evening before, when Calamos Investments hosted a reception for dinner sponsors and supporters, marking the start of a weekend dedicated to strengthening the Greek diaspora’s commitment to Greece’s future. A special moment came when Koudounis, who had celebrated his 60th birthday the previous day, was surprised by his family with a video tribute, a cake and a gift from THI, while Konstantinos Argiros led the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday.”

Addressing the sold-out audience before introducing Argiros, THI Vice Chairman John Koudounis expressed his pride in the Greek community. “I’ve never been more proud to be Greek than I am tonight,” he said. “I see our shared love for Greece. THI exists to unite Hellenes around the world to invest in Greece’s future, support its people and ensure that the greatest civilization in history has the future it deserves.” He then introduced a video explaining the mission of The Hellenic Initiative.

THI President George Stamas described the weekend as a major success for the organization. “This past weekend in Chicago was a tremendous success for The Hellenic Initiative. I extend my sincere thanks to all who helped make it possible, starting with John Koudounis for his leadership and partnership in making this remarkable weekend possible. These events brought our community together in a powerful way and ultimately raised $1 million in support of THI’s mission,” he said.

THI Board Member Cathy Sakellaris also highlighted the emotional atmosphere inside the arena. “The emotion in the stadium was palpable. Looking around and seeing thousands of Greeks of every generation sharing the same feeling of pride, joy and connection — celebrating who we are and where we come from — was extraordinary. The only moment we can compare it to in terms of pride and collective emotion was the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympics in 2004. That same feeling of unity and deep pride in being Greek filled the entire arena,” she said.

Funds raised during the weekend will support The Hellenic Initiative’s philanthropic and economic development programs in Greece, focusing on entrepreneurship, job creation and humanitarian aid.

Since its founding, The Hellenic Initiative has invested more than $10.5 million in humanitarian aid grants and over $13.5 million in economic development initiatives, helping strengthen communities across Greece and support long-term growth.
