Thousands gathered at Nea Smyrni Square as celebrities and ordinary people showed up to watch Eurovision star Sakis Rouvas perform Mikis Theodorakis’ “Axion Esti” with lyrics by nobel laureate Odysseas Elytis. The concert, held to celebrate 90 years since the birth of the great Greek singer. Apart from Rouvas, baritone Kostas Raphailidis and actor Yiorgos Giannopoulos are taking part in the performance.

In the past, the work has been interpreted by some of Greece’s finest singers, such as Grigoris Bithikotsis, George Dalaras, Dimitris Basis, John Cotsiras and many more. Rouvas’ decision to perform this work drew a great deal of speculation concerning his abilities and whether the pop idol should perform this revered work.

A number of celebrities protested against Rouvas’ decision to perform the work. A lot hangs in the balance on Saturday night as Sakis Rouvas takes the stage to prove that he can meet all manner of challenges whether as a star of video clips, ancient tragedies, musicals and now, this work.

Last summer, Rouvas was criticised for his role in Bacchae for which he received the Karolos Koun award. Despite the criticism, Rouvas is insistent on trying new things and breaking new ground in his development as a singer and actor. “I will not remain stagnant because that’s what some people want,” he said.

The composer himself has backed Rouvas, stressing that though it wasn’t his decision to have Rouvas perform the work, there is no reason why the work should be limited to a few. He said, “Firstly, my views on the matter of ‘bans’ are well known, as I have supported them for a few decades and can be summarized as follows: I believe that a work goes beyond the creator himself once it is created and should not be judged in a dictatorial manner regarding who is ‘worthy’ of interpreting it and hwo is not. The only critic is the public and time. They are the ones who judge what goes to the garbage and what remains forever. I should also state that I consider a bad execution to be better than a ban.”

Τη στήριξή της στον Σάκη Ρουβά, μετά τα επικριτικά σχόλια ορισμένων, εξέφρασε μέσω επιστολής της και η Νάνα Μούσχουρη, τονίζοντας -μεταξύ άλλων-  τα εξής: «Σε παρακολουθώ σε όλα τα μουσικά βήματά σου και χαίρομαι που η καριέρα σου εξελίσσεται σοβαρά και όμορφα, γιατί είναι υποχρέωση κάθε καλλιτέχνη, για να μη μείνει στάσιμος, να δοκιμάζει και άλλα είδη μουσικής, στα οποία μπορεί να δώσει μια άλλη πνοή, νεώτερη.  Λυπάμαι που δεν μπορώ να είμαι παρούσα στην παράστασή σου, αλλά θα είμαι εκεί με τη σκέψη μου. Με το ταλέντο σου, την ειλικρίνεια, το σεβασμό και την αγάπη σου για τη μουσική θα προωθήσεις στη δική σου γενιά και στο μέλλον ένα μεγάλο μουσικό έργο». Απόψε θα κριθεί, εάν ο Σάκης Ρουβάς «εστί Άξιος». Κι αν κρίνουμε, από όλες εκείνες τις φορές που δέχτηκε σκληρή κριτική, διαψεύδοντας τις Κασσάνδρες, απόψε, αναμένεται να είναι μία βραδιά, όπου το άστρο του θα λάμψει περισσότερο από κάθε άλλη φορά.
