Clashes broke out on Sunday night (22/3) following an anti-government protest in Tirana.
More specifically, thousands of protesters gathered in the streets of the Albanian capital outside the office of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has been governing the country since 2013, following a call by the opposition party, the Democratic Party (PD). They demanded his resignation, as well as that of his government, due to allegations of corruption.
Protesters threw Molotov cocktails and fireworks at police vehicles, government buildings, and the prime minister’s office.
Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.
Traffic was disrupted on many roads in the Albanian capital, while hundreds of police officers were deployed in the area.
Sunday’s protest is just the latest in a series of anti-government demonstrations that have taken place in Albania in recent months.
Opposition parties are calling for the resignation of Rama’s government over corruption, but it does not appear willing to step down.
