“They died on their own—I didn’t report it because I was afraid they would take my house,” says son in Zografou; arrested for homicide (updated)

The neighbour refers to a family that had serious health and psychological problems

The claim that his 91-year-old mother and her 56-year-old daughter—who was also his sister—died on their own is reportedly being put forward by the family’s 54-year-old son, who is being questioned after the bodies of the two women were found in an advanced state of decomposition in an apartment in Zografou, in a room that he himself had sealed.

According to reports, he says that about three months ago his sister, who was suffering from cancer, died, and because he did not want it to become known, he placed her in the room with their mother, who died two days later.

Attempting to justify not reporting the two deaths, he claimed he was afraid that the house where the bodies were found would be taken away from him.

However, these claims do not appear to convince the prosecutor handling the case, who requested the arrest of the 54-year-old for serial homicide, which was carried out.

“They died on their own; I didn’t say anything because I was afraid they would take my house,” said the son in Zografou, who was arrested for homicide.

The two women who were found dead

“They died three months ago”

According to the same sources, the man says that the two women died three months ago, a timeframe that aligns with what their relatives have reported.

At the same time, the coroner’s initial assessment is that the bodies of the mother and daughter had been in the room where they were found for more than one month.

For two women aged 91 and 56, who were found dead in an apartment in Zografou, a neighbour of the family spoke, describing a situation that – as he said – was a “perennial problem”, as the members of the family allegedly faced serious difficulties, both psychological and medical.

According to his testimony, until about a month and a half to two months ago there was a rudimentary daily contact with the two women as they went out for coffee. Lately, however, their absence has become noticeable, causing concern among the neighbours, as – he said – there was a steady routine that was suddenly interrupted. “We haven’t seen them for about 1.5 to 2 months and that worried us because there was a routine,” he said.

His testimony:

He added that on Friday, police officers went to the apartment, but the 54-year-old son of the family, who was inside, would not open the door. At the same time, a tenant from the ground floor had indicated that a strong smell was being noticed from the apartment building where the two women lived.

He also noted that he would occasionally see the 54-year-old son leave the house, go to the supermarket and then return to the apartment, where he remained locked up, with no further communication with the other residents of the apartment building.
