The U.S. Army has announced the new combat course that all active-duty American military personnel will be required to pass successfully every year.

“The Combat Field Test (CFT) is a critical step forward in ensuring that our soldiers serving in the most physically demanding specialties have the specialized physical fitness required to dominate the modern battlefield,” said U.S. Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll.

The CFT includes seven tests:

• 1.6 km run
• 30 push-ups with pauses
• 100-meter sprint
• 16 lifts of an 18 kg sandbag onto a 1.65-meter platform
• 50-meter carry of two Army five-gallon water containers, each weighing 18 kg
• 50-meter movement exercise consisting of 25 meters of crawling and 25 meters of running with 3–5 second “bursts” of jumping
• final 1.6 km run

Soldiers must complete the test in 30 minutes or less while wearing the Army Combat Uniform, boots, and a brown T-shirt, without headgear.

It was also announced that for one year there will be no penalties for those who fail the new version of the CFT, while those who do fail will be given the option to request a transfer to a non-combat specialty if they feel they cannot meet the requirements.
