Queen Margrethe of Denmark, 86, who abdicated the throne two years ago, has been hospitalized with a large hematoma on her hip following a fall, the royal palace announced today.

Tests showed that there is a “significant accumulation of blood in the hip area,” the statement said.

The queen, who passed the throne to her eldest son, Frederik, will remain under treatment at Copenhagen’s Rigshospitalet hospital for several days. She is “in good spirits, considering the circumstances,” the palace added.

Margrethe underwent angioplasty surgery in mid-May and was hospitalized for several days. She remains highly popular in Denmark, mainly because she modernized the monarchy, but in recent years she has faced repeated health problems. In the past, she had stated that she did not intend to abdicate, but changed her mind after undergoing major back surgery in 2023.
