The formal ratification of the election of Konstantinos Kyranakis as secretary of New Democracy, taking place today at 17:30, will mark the return of Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the party headquarters of New Democracy after several months.

It will be a kind of “pre-election rehearsal,” as gradually Piraeus Street will come alive and be transformed into an electoral headquarters aimed at a third term. The nomination of Mr. Kyranakis, who has already begun contacts with party officials and yesterday also spoke with former New Democracy president Vangelis Meimarakis during the collection of the required signatures for his candidacy, represents a triple message for Mitsotakis: renewal, since he is a representative of the younger generation; activation of the party mechanism; and the signal that a tested minister is being deployed for the battle of a third term.

In his speech, Mr. Mitsotakis is expected to send important political messages and outline priorities toward 2030 — the horizon he sets with an eye on renewing the government’s mandate. He will refer to the government’s work, calling on New Democracy officials not to let it be lost in everyday management and not to treat it as self-evident.

At the same time, Mr. Mitsotakis is expected to emphasize the patriotic character of the party, responding to the so-called “professional worriers” — indirectly targeting Antonis Samaras, who is intensifying moves to create a new party.

Mr. Mitsotakis is expected to outline the three-priority framework of the post-2027 government program of New Democracy, which will gradually be translated into specific pre-election commitments. The first pillar is prosperity, focusing on convergence with Europe through higher incomes, lower unemployment, and strengthened competitiveness. The second pillar is a secure and strong Greece, with reinforcement of the country’s deterrent power, emphasis on its geopolitical role in the region, and internal security. Finally, there is reference to “institutional regeneration,” with modernization and further digitalization of the state and improved functioning of institutions.

For all this to happen, the party organization of New Democracy must move into full operation — and this is the key challenge that Konstantinos Kyranakis is called to fulfill. This is precisely why he was chosen as secretary, as the Maximos Mansion considers that Kyranakis has been tested in difficult conditions and does not avoid political risk; on the contrary, he undertakes high-pressure missions and is associated with significant government “victories” and tangible reforms for citizens.

Immediately after his formal election, Mr. Kyranakis will be tasked with running the “summer party campaign” of New Democracy, which will be announced by Mr. Mitsotakis. Already from Thursday, New Democracy is moving to Thessaloniki, where the first political academy for party cadres will take place with the participation of senior government and party officials (A. Skertsos, T. Kontogeorgis, M. Voridis, C. Dimas, D. Kairidis, N. Romanos, G. Smyrlis, V. Feugas). This will be followed by three stops in Agrinio (18 June), Ioannina (25 June), and Larissa (2 July).

At the same time, since Monday, mixed teams of ministers, MPs, and general secretaries have been operating in the prefectures of Central Macedonia — an initiative that usually begins shortly before the Thessaloniki International Fair. Clearly, ahead of elections, party activity is being systematized in order to limit losses, especially outside urban centers.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself will also return to the campaign trail, as on Saturday he will be in Rhodes, while next week he may visit a neighborhood in Attica. According to competent sources, the real challenge for New Democracy in the coming period is the revitalization of the party base and the reactivation of citizens who remain emotionally close to the ruling party but have distanced themselves from active participation.
